“I didn’t feel like a case number.
They treated me like a neighbor.”
Meet James — A post-9/11 veteran in the Triad who fell behind on rent and faced eviction. After contacting VBH, a coordinator assessed the situation the same day, connected him with rental assistance, and spoke directly with his landlord. Within a week, the eviction was stopped.
Two months later, VBH helped James access training that led to stable employment.
“I went from panic to peace in less than a month. VBH stood by me the whole way.”
Meet Charles — A Marine Corps Reserve veteran turned police officer who is a passionate mental health advocate. After losing a friend to suicide and responding to a fatal police shooting, he takes mental health very seriously.
Charles is a big believer in VBH’s Battle Buddy program, an upstream suicide prevention program that trains veterans to support each other by lending an ear and being there for each other.
“The biggest thing I think we can do is listen to someone. You don’t have to have the answer, just sit there and listen, let them get it out.”
